What is API Versioning and why is it important?
API Versioning is the practice of managing changes to an API by creating different versions, allowing backward compatibility while introducing new features or breaking changes.
Why Versioning is Important
- Prevents breaking existing client applications
- Allows gradual migration to new versions
- Supports multiple client versions simultaneously
- Enables testing new features without affecting production
- Provides clear communication about API changes
Common Versioning Strategies
1. URI Versioning (Most Common):
GET /api/v1/users
GET /api/v2/users
- Pros: Clear, easy to understand, simple to implement
- Cons: Can lead to URI proliferation
2. Header Versioning:
GET /api/users
Headers: API-Version: 2
- Pros: Clean URIs, flexible
- Cons: Less visible, harder to test in browser
3. Query Parameter Versioning:
GET /api/users?version=2
- Pros: Easy to implement
- Cons: Can be overlooked, pollutes query string
Testing Different API Versions
- Test all supported versions
- Verify backward compatibility
- Test version-specific features
- Validate proper error handling for unsupported versions
- Check deprecation warnings
