21API TestingAPI TestingFundamentals

What is API Testing and why is it important?

API Testing is a type of software testing that validates Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to ensure they meet expectations for functionality, reliability, performance, and security.

What is Tested in API Testing

  • Functionality: Does the API return correct responses?
  • Reliability: Is the API consistently available?
  • Performance: How fast does the API respond?
  • Security: Is the API protected against threats?
  • Data Validation: Are request/response formats correct?
  • Error Handling: Does it handle errors gracefully?

Types of API Testing

  1. Functional Testing: Verify API functions work correctly
  2. Load Testing: Test API under expected load
  3. Security Testing: Check for vulnerabilities
  4. Integration Testing: Test API with other systems
  5. Validation Testing: Verify data formats and schemas
  6. Negative Testing: Test with invalid inputs

Why API Testing is Important

  • APIs are the backbone of modern applications
  • Faster than UI testing
  • Language-independent testing
  • Early detection of issues
  • Better test coverage
  • Supports CI/CD pipelines
  • Postman
  • REST Assured
  • SoapUI
  • JMeter
  • Karate DSL
